๐A Day in the Life of a QMHP
There's no single day that looks exactly like any other. That's part of what makes this work interesting. It's also part of what makes it require a certain kind of person.
Here's what a typical day can look like.
The morning
You know who you're seeing today because you built your own schedule. You've already confirmed your sessions for the week. If anything changed, you know about it ahead of time.
You review your notes from the last session before you head out. What was going on with this kid? What did we work on? What were they going to try before the next time?
That prep takes 10 or 15 minutes. It matters more than most people think.
The sessions
You might have two or three sessions in a day, sometimes more depending on the schedule you've built and the caseload you're carrying.
Each one is different. One family is dealing with school avoidance and the parent is at her limit. Another is a teen who barely talks for the first 20 minutes but opens up once he trusts you're not going anywhere. Another is a younger kid who needs movement to regulate, so half the session happens on the back porch.
You adjust. That's the job.
In between
You're documenting. Within 24 hours of each session, the note needs to be in and submitted for LPC review.
Some QMHPs write notes immediately after a session while it's fresh. Others batch them at the end of the day. Either way, they get done. That's not negotiable.
You're also staying in contact with the families on your caseload. Confirming upcoming sessions. Following up if something came up. Making sure the next week is set.
The end of the day
There's no punch-out. You're a 1099 contractor, which means you built this schedule and you manage it.
That flexibility is one of the real advantages of this work. It also means accountability is on you. The families on your caseload are depending on you to show up.
The QMHPs who thrive here are the ones who take that seriously.
